Why Do Kidney Stones Form?

Kidney stones form when certain minerals and salts in the urine become highly concentrated and start to crystallize inside the kidneys. This usually happens due to dehydration, which reduces urine volume and allows substances like calcium, oxalate, and uric acid to stick together. Diets high in salt, sugar, or animal protein can also increase stone risk. Other causes include obesity, digestive disorders, certain medications, and family history. When these crystals grow larger, they form hard stones that can cause severe pain if they block the urinary tract. Drinking enough water is the best prevention.
